Drinking This Holiday? Me Too: How I Supplement to Combat The Damage Done.
The Holiday Season is upon us! So many parties, so many relatives, and for some, so much stress. Usually any or all of these things can lead to indulging in a cocktail or two. Don't worry, I am not here to tell you how bad this is for your liver (because I know, being the brilliant being you are, that you already know that.) However, I am here to tell you what I do when I myself indulge in spirits to help my body cope.
All alcohol dehydrates us and causes some inflammation, but some are easier to process and contain less toxins when compared to others. Beer has the most toxins of any common alcoholic beverage, so I stay away from it. I tend to stick with high-end tequila, because Tim Ferris told me its the healthiest, but also, I like it.
Here is My Drinking Protocol:
Before: Probiotic, B Vitamin Complex (Vitamins, especially B are depleted when drinking), Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA is a potent antioxidant on its own and helps your body produce glutathione), & N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) (a great nutrient for liver support).
During Drinking: Drink one glass of water with each drink & take one Vitamin C before each drink. The Vitamin C will help block the conversion of alcohol into aldehyde, the most hangover-causing metabolite that also causes very fast aging, wrinkles, etc.
Right After: I take 2-4 Activated Charcoal supplements after drinking. Whether this actually absorbs toxins from the alcohol is controversial, but I have had good results with taking them, so I am sticking with it
Before Bed: I take Glutathione, the body’s master antioxidant which also helps support liver detox and immunity, among other things. I also take this supplement throughout the holiday season to support liver health because the liver can use all the support it can get as I travel and eat things my body typically thinks of as foreign.
Next Day: If my stomach is feeling unsettled, I will use herbs like ginger, chamomile, or peppermint. I also might use Quiet Digestion by Health Concerns, and I take a probiotic. I drink a cup or two of nettle tea for its nourishing, detoxing, and beautifying benefits. Later in the day, after some food, I will take a general liver detox supplement that contains Milk Thistle and Dandelion, N-Acetyl Cysteine, and Glutathione.
The Next Few Days after That: I drink tons of water and detoxing tea. I continue with the NAC, Liver Supplement, and Glutathione for at least three days.
Okay, so I know this protocol is a little intense for most, but being as healthy as possible is fun for me and I love my supplements. So it's a win-win for this Holistic Health-aholic. If you try any or all of it, let me know how you feel! I'd love to hear from you. Also open to receiving holiday cocktail recipes!
Cheers my friends!
